The call of the wild is singing in our ears this night as we gather our stuff and our selves for a two-week journey into the wilds of Alaska. Most of our time will be spent touching earth and sky in places far off the beaten path. Our two sons who call Alaska "home" will make sure of that!
I have to admit to some apprehension about this trip. Our plans call for canoe camping, yurt living, kayaking, salmon fishing, camping, hiking, and time at our son's really remote cabin in the woods. These plans don't really include showers, bathrooms, yarn shops, or wireless internet.
But, I believe we all need wild places once in a while just to remind us of what is real and true. We need to taste fresh breezes and meditate on the clouds above. We need to lay in meadows and listen to birds. We need to walk in places without power lines and sleep under starry skies. And yes, we even need to encounter wild things to remind us we aren't the only creatures on the earth (although I would prefer these wild things NOT be grizzlies!)
And so, I also look forward to this time of connecting at a soul-level with pure life as it has danced in the universe for millenia. I look forward to touching the wild and remembering who I am, and my place in this incredible cosmos. The showers can wait. The flushes can wait. Heaven knows the wireless internet and yarn shops can wait. I'm gonna dance in the wild with the wild!
